For you to read a table easily, it should have headings that explain what the information in the rows and columns mean. The heading should catch the reader's eye so they understand what information the table contains in only a few seconds. You can ensure this happens by inserting headings into your Microsoft Word table.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Open Microsoft Word and start a new blank document.
Step2
Insert a table by choosing the "Table" menu, point to "Insert" and click on "Table…" to bring up the "Insert Table" dialog box.
Step3
Set your table size by choosing how many columns and rows you want in your table. Set the autofit behavior to fixed column width, autofit to contents or autofit to window.
Step4
Click "OK" on the "Insert Table" dialog box to close the dialog box and insert the table into your document.
Step5
Type the text that you want in the column headings for your table into the top row.
Step6
Change the top row to a heading style. Select the top row by clicking and dragging with your mouse and selecting "Headings" from the "Table" menu. The text you type will appear in a heading style.
Step7
Repeat the same process for your row headings by selecting the text in the first column and selecting "Headings" from the "Table" menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you insert another table into the document, you will have to reapply the Headings setting in the same manner to change your text to the Heading format.
