Just the thought of sitting in rush hour traffic can make some people anxious and frustrated. Once you acknowledge that there is nothing you can do about sitting in that long line of cars, you can learn to relax.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit your local library to get some audio books or books on tape. While you sit in traffic, listen to a favorite novel. Self-help books may be a good choice for people who are dealing with stress.

  2. Step 2

Buy some favorite compact discs or tapes of your favorite musical artists. Classical music tends to be calming, but it may not be the best choice for some people.

  3. Step 3

Practice visual meditations. Allowing yourself to breathe deeply and to virtually take a trip to a place of comfort may allow your body and nerves to relax.

  4. Step 4

List some things that you want to do while you are waiting in traffic. You shouldn't write while you are driving, but it is fine to make the list while you are waiting to nudge up a few spots. By taking the time to create personal goals for the week, you can take your mind off the traffic.

  5. Step 5

Eat a small snack. Taking the time to unwind and eat a favorite food can be very relaxing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Even though you want to relax more when you're stuck in traffic congestion or grid lock, keep focused on the road to avoid accidents.
