Step 1
Get comfortable moving quickly in your wheelchair. If you are new to wheelchair basketball, it could take you a period of months to get fully accustomed to your new environment. Be patient and don't rush the time it takes you to learn the ropes.
-
Step 2
Consider purchasing a wheelchair built for speed. You can find such a wheelchair online (see Resources below). These wheelchairs have tested as some of the fastest and most mobile wheelchairs available. However, read the rules of your wheelchair basketball league to see if there are any rules or regulations regarding the brand or type of wheelchairs that are allowed.

Step 3
Exercise your hands, wrists and arms. To move faster on your wheelchair, you need to build strength in your upper body. Exercises that can help you build the strength in your hands, wrists and arms include biceps curls, reverse biceps curls and bench press. Use weights that are manageable when you begin, and then increase the weight as you see fit.

Step 4
Practice on an actual basketball court. A good drill to do is to go up and down the court as fast as you can. Doing this repeatedly not only improves your speed, but it also improves your stamina, which can be just as important.
