To keep your yard in top condition, you may need a landscaper. Most contractors landscape during the day when you are at work, so you may not be able to observe the labor. However, you can take steps to monitor your landscaper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Agree on a plan of service before your landscaper begins. Put this in writing so you will have the document when you review the contractor's work. You can point to the list if any disagreements occur.

  2. Step 2

Check details. Landscapers can hide shortcuts if you are not vigilant. Take the time to walk your property. Look behind bushes and in the gardens for weeds covered by wood chips or for yard trash stashed inappropriately.

  3. Step 3

Show up unexpectedly once in a while. You don't want your landscaper to think you are monitoring the work, but you have a right to check his progress. Visit the property unannounced.

  4. Step 4

Ask neighbors to act as spies. Tell them you are interested in knowing how the work is done and if the workers are respectful of the neighbors. Compare and monitor your neighbors' reports with the lead landscaper's reports and the bills you receive.
