Many people purchase a universal remote because they're tired of having different remotes for the TV, cable, DVR, DVD player, surround sound and whatever other electronics they may have. A universal remote can be programmed for all of these electronics and is also purchased by many people when the DVR remote is lost or broken. Follow these steps to learn how to use a universal remote with a DVR.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a Philips Pronto CCF remote if you have a TiVo DVR. This remote is able to be programmed for any DVR but already supports TiVo.

  2. Step 2

Check the codes on the pre-programmed remotes to see if they support your brand of DVR. The back of the package should say what brand of different electronics they are compatible with. Follow the directions on the package to program your DVR code into the remote.

  3. Step 3

Buy a learning remote. You can program this remote with your other remote by pointing the remote at it and capturing the signals. These are more expensive than pre-programmed remotes.

  4. Step 4

Hook the LogiTech universal remote to your computer. Input the brand of DVR you use and you can program your remote to operate your whole home entertainment system.

  5. Step 5

Look up the code for your DVR online if you can't locate it in the handbook or on the package. You can also contact the manufacturer of your DVR. All remotes use the same code.

Tips & Warnings
  • Figure out if your DVR works on infrared or radio frequency signals before deciding what kind of universal remote to buy. This can be learned by looking at your manual or calling your manufacturer.
