How to Buy a Catamaran

Catamarans are beautiful out on the open water. They come in so many styles, sizes and colors that it can be very difficult to make a decision on which one is best for your needs. Do a little research, a little leg work and price comparison to help in your purchase decisions. A few suggestions are listed to steer you in the right direction for your sailing adventure.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to boat shows to be able to view a large selection of catamarans. Many of these take place in larger cities at least once a year. If you are shopping for a large catamaran, plan to check out the boat shows that are listed as "international" boat shows. These will have huge selections of catamarans and boats from all over the world. Boating manufacturers and suppliers will have booths with information and sales persons on site to answer all your questions.

    • 2

Shop at your local boating or marine stores in your area. Many catamarans are large, so they may not have them all in their show room. The sales persons can help you view the available models and styles. Often, they will keep a supply of catamarans docked at the local marina, so you may need to make an appointment if you want to take a "test sail."

    • 3

Contact a boat broker to help you with your search for the right catamaran to buy. They will be able to check sources from all over the world, if need be, to locate catamarans that could suit your needs and wants. They do charge a fee for their services, so get all your information up front before you sign anything.

    • 4

Check with local marinas for postings on catamarans for sale. Some may be docked at the marina and you can look them over before contacting the owner for more information.

    • 5

Browse the Internet for online auctions. There are all types of catamarans on these sites. Be sure to get all the details including shipping arrangements before you consider making a bid. Given the size and weight of a catamaran, you may want to have it picked up by a boating transfer service or use the appropriate trailer yourself, should you purchase through an auction site.

    • 6

Flip through a marine trade newspaper. These should be available at boating and marine supply retailers. Sometimes these are even free. There will probably be sections devoted just to catamarans, so it's a great source for gathering information and comparing prices. Try reading the city newspaper for ads in the classified section. Catamarans will be listed with boats and other related marine items.

    • 7

Buy a boating magazine or marine supplier magazine at your local newsstand or bookstore. Check out all the advertisements for information and then refer to the references in the back of the magazine for contact information.
