1. Determine your budget. Used stereo equipment will obviously be less expensive than buying new, however some used pieces are still quite costly. Decide how much money you can afford to spend and stick to that amount.

2. Visit a high-end audio retailer. Often, you can find quality used stereo equipment at such places because others have brought their equipment to the store to trade up to something better and more expensive. Plus, many of these stores have demo models that they're willing to sell for a lower price than new models.

3. Check out online trading and auction websites. You may also find something in the classified section of your local newspaper. Let your friends know that you're looking for used stereo equipment; they may have some that they'd like to sell or know of another potential seller.

4. Make sure the used equipment you decide to buy is exactly what you want. It should be in your price range, be of adequate quality and have the functionality you want. Ask the seller to set up the equipment and let you listen to how it sounds before you buy.

5. Ask the seller if they provide any type of warranty. Ideally, they'll provide at least a 90 day warranty if the piece is relatively new. It's also helpful to ask about a return or exchange policy in case the used equipment doesn't work with some of your existing components.

6. Be patient. Buying used stereo equipment can be time consuming and it may take some time before you find the right deal.
