How to Explain Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is the most widely used method to help autistic children and adults. It teaches them to be able to communicate through a system of rewards and consequences. The process of ABA therapy can be very difficult for the average person to understand, follow these steps if you want to explain Applied Behavioral Analysis to somebody.

  1. Step 1

    Explain how autism affects your child's ability to communicate with others. Help the person understand that your child can't learn and absorb information in the same way as somebody who doesn't suffer from autism.

  2. Step 2

    Teach the person how the process of ABA therapy helps an autistic person learn the proper way to behave through rewards and consequences. Assure him that ABA uses the basic theory of behaviorism and has been thoroughly researched evaluated through several long term studies. It has been proven to be effective in treating autism.

  3. Step 3

    Give examples of how Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy works. Ensure that he understands that it is a gentle process that teaches an autistic person to want to communicate. Assure him that through ABA a child learns how to learn in her natural environment.

  4. Step 4

    Show him the improvements that your autistic child has made because of applied behavioral analysis therapy. Reassure him that it hasn't turned your child into a robot that just does things because she was taught to do them.
