How to Play Rhyming Fish

The Rhyming Fish card game, also called the Go Fish Rhyming game, is a game for kids that helps them build reading skills early on by making reading and rhyming fun. This game will help children to read and write faster by looking for matching rhyming words as they play.

Instructions

    • 1

Write one different easy-to-read word on each of 18 cards. On another set of 18 cards write a rhyming word for each of the original 18 words to make a total of 36 cards. Each word should have only one other word that rhymes with it.

    • 2

Scramble up the cards and deal seven out to each player. Place all other cards face down in the center of the playing area.

    • 3

Lay down any initial matches in your hand. When laying down matching cards, always say the words on both cards aloud.

    • 4

Take turns asking another player if they have a card that rhymes with a card you are holding. Youngest goes first in this game.

    • 5

Give the card to the other player if you have the card they are asking for. Say "Go fish," if you do not have the card you are asked for.

    • 6

Take a card from the deck face down on the table if another player has said "Go fish," after you have asked them for a card. Go around the table taking turns asking for cards clockwise around the table.

    • 7

Win the game if you have the most matching sets or "books" at the end of the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • When creating these cards, take 18 regular index cards and cut them evenly down the center to make 36 square cards.

  • Use four and three letter words in this game for early readers. Some words you can use are, hop and pop, dish and fish, sat and mat and so forth.

  • Create rhyming words with each vowel sound. Use both long and short vowel sounds. Discuss these vowel sounds as you play to get the full learning effect of this game.

  • If a player asks you for a card, you must give it to them.
