Instructions

    • 1

Measure the total length you need the pieces of board to be. For instance, if you're cutting baseboard or molding, measure from one wall to the other.

    • 2

Decide at what point you will make your scarf joint. You might wish to make one board longer than the other, so the joint is closer to one corner of the room rather than in the middle.

    • 3

Cut one board to length. On one end cut a 45-degree angle against the grain. Sand the edge smooth. Then cut the other board to length, with a 45-degree angle cut opposite of the other board so the two boards can be placed together with one overlapping the other.

    • 4

Place one board with the 45-degree angle facing toward the room. Nail it into place. Put wood glue on the 45-degree angle. Then put the other board into place with the 45-degree angle overlapping the other board.

    • 5

Wipe off any excess glue that might leak when you place the two boards together. Nail the second board into place. Sand lightly to blend the two cut edges together to make a seamless scarf joint. Stain or paint the baseboard or molding, as desired.

Tips & Warnings
