A portable washing machine is a convenient household appliance, until it breaks. Most service calls can be avoided though if you learn the basics on how to repair common washing machine malfunctions. Follow these steps to learn how to repair your portable washing machine.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check to make sure the hot and cold taps are both turned on if your portable washing machine won't fill with water. If they're both on and your washing machine's drum is turning, then that means that the timer thinks water is in the machine already. Turn it to the agitating cycle and let it finish washing.

  2. Step 2

Verify that cold water is available if your portable washing machine sticks on the rinse cycle. There may also be a clog in the drain hose. Remove the drain hose, empty it out in the sink and check for blockages.

  3. Step 3

Replace the drum bearing if the portable washing machine is rumbling and very noisy on the spin cycle. You can verify that the bearings need to be replaced by removing the belt from around the drum and rotating the drum by hand. If you hear the rumbling noise, then the bearings should be replaced.

  4. Step 4

Clean out the fabric softener dispenser if it does not drain. This is caused by the fabric softener clogging it up. Scrub it with dishwashing liquid and hot water to allow it to drain.

  5. Step 5

Change the drum pulley if the washing machine belt comes off causing it not to spin. If the pulley is wobbling then the drum bearings need to be replaced.
