How fantastic it would be to get rid of unwanted body hair and never have to shave or pluck again. Plenty of people pay big bucks for just such a convenience: laser hair removal. The key factor is getting it done by a licensed, reliable professional. Here is how to find a laser hair removal practitioner.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do your homework when checking out possible facilities. If you opt for a medical spa, make sure that there is a board-certified physician heading the establishment.

  2. Step 2

Schedule a consultation at your establishment of choice. No place should offer "walk-in" laser treatments, so be wary of any that do.

  3. Step 3

Ask a lot of questions at your consultation. Be sure that your procedure will be performed by a trained, board-certified dermatologist. If you are told that there will be a physician on the premises during your procedure (though not necessarily performing said procedure), look elsewhere. Remember, laser hair removal is a medical procedure and should only be done by a medical professional.

  4. Step 4

Ask to see before and after photos of previous clients during your consultation. As skin tone is a huge factor in laser candidacy, ask to see photos of clients with skin tones that are close to your own.

  5. Step 5

Find out how long the physician has been performing laser hair removal treatments. Ask about what equipment he/she will be using and how much experience they have on that particular system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be satisfied by simply seeing a medical degree on the wall. While it is not the norm, there have been cases of cosmetic procedures performed by physicians with degrees in internal medicine and even dentistry. Be sure that the doctor you choose specializes in dermatology and/or cosmetic medical procedures.
  • If you receive a topical gel containing lidocaine to apply before the procedure, follow the instructions completely! In excessive amounts, lidocaine can cause heart failure as well as problems in the central nervous system.
