How to Make a Rapunzel Costume

Rapunzel was the fairy tale princess locked in a tower by an evil witch because Rapunzel's parents angered the witch. Rapunzel's tower had no doors, so the only way to get to the tower was by climbing Rapunzel's very long hair. If you want to make a Rapunzel costume for Halloween or for a costume party, there are some things to keep in mind.

Decide how you are going to do the hair. Rapunzel is famous for her long, long hair, strong enough for a witch (and later a prince) to climb up. You will need to decide how long you want the hair to be, what kind of wig you are going to use and whether you will leave the hair long, and lustrous or braid it for ease of movement. Try not to have the hair so long that it becomes an annoyance. If the costume is for a young girl, you may want to consider having her wear a waist-length (or shorter) wig.

Think about your outfit. While the hair is the most important part, the clothes are necessary too. Since Rapunzel is usually portrayed as a princess (though she really wasn't) you will need a long skirt and a pretty bodice. Often Rapunzel costumes are made from velvet or satin.

Consider the accessories. If this is a child's costume, you will want to keep everything simple, especially if she is wearing it to school. Adults can have more fun with jewelry and crowns. You also may consider including a set of plastic twin babies with your costume, if it's for an adult. In the original story, Rapunzel did have twin babies.
