Flowers may not be the first decoration that comes to mind during the Christmas season. There are plenty of flowers and plants that bloom during the holidays that will brighten up your home and are easy to add to the decor. Read on to see just how easy it is to buy Christmas flowers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Florist
  • Poinsettias
  • Mistletoe
  • Amaryllis
  • Christmas Cactus
  • Holly
  1. Step 1

Buy poinsettias and you have purchased the best known flower of the Christmas season. These beautiful plants bloom in red, white and pink, or a variation on these colors. They look great in entryways or on every other step going up a winding staircase.

  2. Step 2

Hang mistletoe over a doorway to keep the tradition of "kissing under the mistletoe" alive in your home. This plant comes in a bunch and usually has white or ivory berries. You can buy bunches of treated mistletoe (to keep it fresh) at craft stores or nurseries, or knock bunches of fresh mistletoe out of a tree in your yard.

  3. Step 3

Grow amaryllis from bulbs and place on the kitchen counter at Christmas time. These bloom in many colors, but white and red look wonderful and complement other Christmas decorations during the holidays.

  4. Step 4

Place a Christmas cactus in the kitchen window sill and bring a bit of a tropical look to the Christmas decor this year. The leaves will turn red with too much sunlight so you will want to move it away from the window periodically.

  5. Step 5

Decorate your home or office with the plant that began the traditional red and green colors associated with Christmas. Holly can be used as a wreath, swag or simply placed in a beautiful pot. The shiny green foliage and red berries exemplify Christmas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speak to the florist about how to care for the various Christmas flowers that you purchase.
  • Add care instructions if you are going to give Christmas flowers to someone as a gift.
  • Do not place poinsettias on the floor or where pets can reach them. They are poisonous to animals.
  • If opting for fresh mistletoe, shake out the bunches before bringing them into your home. Otherwise, you could bring unwanted critters into your home.
