1
Identify what types of subsurface materials and surface materials you plan to use. Be sure to take into consideration the costs of maintenance. Figure the costs to install a driveway as a do-it-yourself project versus hiring a professional to do it.
-
2
Make sure you allow for plenty of drainage. You do not want water to pool on your driveway nor do you want it to run back into your house. If possible avoid making the driveway grade too steep especially if you live in a part of the country that has icy and snowy winters.

3
Measure the desired width of the driveway. Allow enough room for both vehicles and pedestrian walkways. Make sure the width of the driveway is in proportion to the overall size of your house.
-
4
Obtain any permits necessary to install a driveway. Be sure to have the local utility companies locate any lines that may lie underneath your proposed driveway.
-
5
Prepare the sub-grade area. You can do this yourself or contract it out. Make sure you use enough materials to evenly support the weight of any vehicles on the driveway.
-
6
Pour the concrete or asphalt. Or lay the top surface of your choice. This might be brick pavers or any number of products. Whatever surface material you choose, make sure the thickness meets the building code for your city.
