Step 1
Know the course. While you won't know all the hills and turns, know how long the race is. The length of the race will dictate everything from the sled you use to the number of dogs you choose.
-
Step 2
Choose the correct sled. A basket sled is good for short-distance races or sprints. Long distance races require a toboggan since you'll have to take a significant number of supplies with you.
-
Step 3
Decide on the number of dogs in your team. Most races have different categories for the number of dogs pulling your sled. There is a maximum number and a minimum number for each race. Choose your number of dogs and enter the correct race.
-
Step 4
Take all requirements. Every race will have a different list of what you must take with you. For example, most races require you to have a dog bag large enough for your biggest dog should something go wrong during the race.
-
Step 5
Pack extra. For long-distance races, you may need to stay overnight. Take everything you need for an overnight stay--food, water and camping gear--and don't leave anything behind.
