Whether you are preparing for the Third Grade Spelling Bee or the National Championship, the basics are the same: there's more to it than knowing how to simply spell the word. Bee winners study definitions, etymology and pronunciations. The following steps can guide you to prepare for a spelling bee.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

  1. Step 1

Memorize the spelling rules at the front of the dictionary. Continually study and examine the definition and etymology of words. Notice how words are broken into syllables.

  2. Step 2

Play word games like Scrabble and Boggle. Work crossword puzzles. Play online word games and puzzles. Incorporate words and spelling into a number of fun activities. See Resources below for links.

  3. Step 3

Create a study plan that is appropriate for the grade level and contest. Match the plan to the degree of commitment.

  4. Step 4

Study the "Paideia," the book from which many spelling bee words are drawn. Work through the list of 3600 words in the book in gradual study sessions.

  5. Step 5

Check out online offerings for preparation books and software. Visit websites offering advice for hopefuls for the National Spelling Bee held annually in Washington, D.C.

  6. Step 6

Understand basic Latin and Greek elements of words. Be familiar with the primary languages that are the foundation of the rules of spelling and pronunciation.

  7. Step 7

Visit the National Spelling Bee website for information about enrollment for the upcoming Bee, and a copy of the rules. Review the Plan of Action and a detailed plan of study suggestions.
