Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find the location of the wall studs by using a stud finder. Mark the studs so that you can sink your nails into something solid and keep the molding flush against the wall.

  2. Step 2

Use a tape measure to determine the distance between two inside corners of the wall opposite the main entrance. Cut the molding to fit if it is longer than the wall.

  3. Step 3

Drill holes for the nails in the molding to simplify installation, matching them to the marks on the wall for studs. Pre-drilling keeps the wood from splitting when you hammer the nails.

  4. Step 4

Install the molding using finishing nails. Use a nail punch to drive the nail into the molding without denting the surface.

  5. Step 5

Cut one piece of molding with a miter saw--or a saw and miter box--at a 45-degree angle to fit inside corners or outside corners. Most older houses will not be square, so wait until the first piece is in place, then mark the angle of the cut needed for the second piece.

  6. Step 6

Fill the nail holes with wood putty and sand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear goggles for safety when using power tools.
  • Directly across from the main entrance, be sure to put a long piece of molding rather than a short piece.
