Things You'll Need:
- Yoga mat
- Blanket
- Yoga props as desired (blocks, belts for stretches)
-
Step 1
Take a class in hatha yoga at the local college. Or, buy a book on the subject and get started on your own. Be sure to read any chapters about yoga's origins.
-
Step 2
Start slow. Practice the breathing exercises.
-
Step 3
Take out your yoga mat and put it on the floor in your exercise area. Begin by lying flat on your back with your arms to your side. Totally relax and watch your breath.
-
Step 4
Choose a few stretch poses from your hatha yoga book to start with, and imitate the models. Be sure to take it easy in the beginning.
-
Step 5
Practice the stretches and poses. Choose a ritual of favorite poses to do every day or every week, and learn them well. The sun salutation pose is a good one to start with if you're just learning hatha yoga.
-
Step 6
Build up slowly. Every week or so add a new yoga pose which is just a little harder than the last one you learned. Eventually your body will become stronger and more flexible, and your mind will feel clearer and more focused.
-
Step 7
Consider teaching your own yoga class once you master a number of poses.
