1
Go to a local music store. This is a good way to begin, because the stores give you free publicity. For example, if parents buy a piano for their child, one of their first questions is how to find a teacher. The manager or owner of the store will then let them know that they have their own teachers right there in the store.
-
2
Connect with other piano teachers. If you know other teachers who are no longer accepting students, they can refer prospective students to you.

3
Use word-of-mouth. People can learn about you through your associations at church, neighbors and friends, schools and local college campuses and other associations. After enough time elapses and you've built at least a small group of students, you can move to your home studio if you prefer. By then, hopefully, word has spread that you're a good teacher and accepting students.

4
Have a few recitals each year. Put notices in the local newspapers and let local music stores know about the event. This is good networking that can bring you more students and get your name out there.

Tips & Warnings
A good teacher can depend almost entirely on networking and word of mouth. If you want to build a full-time, large teaching career, media advertising will help it along. But if you only want to teach part-time, word of mouth should suffice.
