How to Groom a Canaan Dog

Canaan Dogs are reliable, capable workers. They are good at herding and tracking, and incredible trainable. Canaan Dogs are very independent minded, and excel at tasks which require them to solve problems on their own. This breed requires a general grooming twice a month and a full grooming once every 8 to 10 weeks.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Slicker brush
  • Pin brush
  • Steel combs
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

    Brush and comb the dog well once a week in order to properly maintain his double coat.

  2. Step 2

    Remove loose hair from the dense undercoat as well as the shed hair from the outer coat.

  3. Step 3

    Bathe your Canaan Dog. Dry the dog with a modern high velocity dryer after the bath. This helps remove extra water from the coat and saves time drying.

  4. Step 4

    Fluff dry the dog with a pin brush or a slicker brush, depending on personal preference.

  5. Step 5

    Remove even more shed hair after the dog's bath.

  6. Step 6

    Scissor and trim hair under and around the feet.

  7. Step 7

    Remove hair that may collect dirt and feces around the anus using thinning shears.

  8. Step 8

    Finish with a final comb out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Canaan Dogs may shed year round depending upon the climate in which they're living.
  • Canaan Dogs are an incredible breed. They have one of the lowest rates of hip dysplasia of any breed.
  • This breed can tolerate an apartment, but it's best to live somewhere with at least a medium sized yard or a place where they can exercise regularly.
  • Canaan Dogs generally weigh between 35 and 55 lbs.
  • Metal rakes can help remove matted pieces of the undercoat.
  • If you plan on using a shedding blade on this animal, make sure you are properly trained in order to avoid injury to yourself or the dog.
