Creating a home theater is a very exciting project that can either be as simple or as complex as the user desires. Typically, a home theater needs a good amount of space to be effective. Although a large screen television is almost always part of the equation, smaller, quality units are equally acceptable. Here are a few tips to help you create the perfect home theater system for your home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Locate a place in the home that has plenty of space. Common areas for home theaters are basements, living rooms or even spare bedrooms. Larger spaces require larger surround sound systems and larger television screens.
Step2
Take an afternoon and drive to as many electronic retailers as time warrants. Inspect, watch and listen to any surround sound system that seems appropriate. Pay particular attention to the visual aspect of the home theater equation.
Step3
Watch each television at eye level if possible. Many retailers have a wall of televisions all tuned to the same program, and all of them have been tweaked to the brightest and highest contrast levels. Take each for a test drive and make an informed decision.
Step4
Consider high definition equipment. This standard will be popular for decades to come and offers unparalleled image and sound quality. Look for solid HDMI connections and true high definition content. Many systems only offer to "up convert" standard or enhanced definition content to high definition.
Step5
Position the new equipment in an optimal visual and audio location. Watch for window glare on the television screen and keep the screen low for best viewing. Move speakers to the best possible locations in the room to achieve a great surround sound effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take along a friend to help advise when buying home theater equipment. They may spot something that has been overlooked.
  • Don't try to "keep up with the Joneses." Consider the unit that works for the space and for the user. Sometimes more is not better.
  • Avoid high sales pressure when shopping. Keep a notebook of pros and cons to refer to when buying home theater equipment.
