When you begin caring for your baby's teeth and mouth starting even before his teeth come in, you can protect her from a whole host of potential dental problems later on. Follow these steps to give your baby's mouth and teeth the attention they need.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your baby in your lap and move her head close to your chest so it's easy for you to look right into the baby's mouth.

  2. Step 2

Wet a clean, soft washcloth and run it over your baby's top and bottom gums, and over the teeth, when they arrive. Clean your baby's mouth and teeth twice a day, at a minimum.

  3. Step 3

Consider switching to a soft-bristled, baby toothbrush once your child's first teeth come in. A damp toothbrush will allow you to remove more food particles and build-up than a wet washcloth. Babies do not require toothpaste to clean their teeth.

  4. Step 4

Bring your baby to the dentist at least once a year, with the first visit occurring within 6 months of the appearance of the first tooth.

  5. Step 5

Ask your baby's pediatrician or dentist if she needs fluoride supplements. Fluoride is an element that provides protection against tooth decay and is found in many water supplies.

  6. Step 6

Begin flossing your baby's teeth when 2 of her teeth start to touch.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your baby's teeth have spots or stains on them, take her to the dentist.
  • Never put your baby to bed with a bottle filled with juice, milk or formula. When your baby repeatedly sucks on a bottle filled with sugared liquids, she is much more likely to suffer tooth decay.
