If you want to perform a puppet show, you need all the appropriate items to do so. Use a stage and as many hand puppets as you like for your skit. Make sure you have plenty of help so your show runs smoothly. The following will show you how to perform a puppet show using hand puppets.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Puppets
  • Stage
  • Script
  • Helpers
  • An audience
  1. Step 1

Make a stage for your hand puppets as elaborate or as simple as you want. Make it from a cardboard box with a curtain hanging behind it or hang a curtain off a table. You can also attach a curtain to two items of equal height or purchase a stage from a puppet company if you want it to be fancier.

  2. Step 2

Obtain your puppets by either purchasing or making them yourself. Decide if you will be using human puppets, animal puppets or both. Choose full-length hand puppets with moving mouths or simple sock-type puppets.

  3. Step 3

Write a script using the puppets you have available to you or purchase scripts online. You can even find some puppet scripts online that are free.

  4. Step 4

Make the props that you will need for your skit. Make them from poster board and attach a stick or pencil to them to hold them up, or use other items for props according to your script.

  5. Step 5

Get your audience together. Whether you are doing this for church, school or your kids and their friends, you need an audience or a puppet show isn't really a show.

  6. Step 6

Recruit several helpers to assist you with your puppet show. If following a skit, tack up a copy of it to something backstage. Highlight all your helpers' lines in a unique color for each person so no one accidentally reads the other's lines. You may also need helpers to hold up your props as you perform.

  7. Step 7

    Raise the curtain for showtime.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are opening the puppet's mouth at the appropriate moment each time you speak a syllable. Use a mirror to practice moving the puppet's mouth.
  • You can also do a ventriloquism type of puppet show by putting a full-length puppet on your lap.
