Download your instant messenger program of choice. Most of the popular programs, such as AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and ICQ, are free to download and run on your computer (see Resources below).
-
2
Come up with a user name that would be unique to only you and use it to register an account with your instant messenger program of choice. You can use a variation of your name combined with numbers, or use something that reflects your interests or personality.

3
Run the program, and add some friends as contacts if you have their user names. Double-click on the user name of someone who shows up as online, and a chat box will appear.

Type into the chat box to send a message. Depending on the instant messaging program you are using, you may have emoticons, colors and font options to play with to liven up your chat.
-
5
Keep your chat window open to continue a conversation over several minutes or even hours. You can chat with multiple people at once by having a separate chat box open for each of your conversations.
