How to Research a Military Career

If you are thinking about pursuing a career in the military, do some research before enlisting. A career in the military equips you with unique values, skills and confidence. There are over 40,000 military jobs and many are not protective services. Find a military career that matches your abilities and interests.

Step1
Explore the different branches of the military and what people do in specific careers. Talk to a military recruiter or people you know in the military. Look at the work environment, the amount of travel and risk during war and times of peace.
Step2
Assess how much training is needed to enter a career and how difficult it is to pursue particular careers. Some careers are very competitive and only the top candidates are promoted.
Step3
Attend a military school to learn more about military training and career opportunities. The military has over 300 schools and many courses can be applied toward college credit.
Step4
Obtain a work-study job at a military base, which will allow you to interact with military professionals on a regular basis.
Step5
Look into becoming an officer if you are attending college or have a college degree. Officer Candidate School is a 14-week course that trains enlisted personnel, warrant officers, and civilians to be Army officers. Look for similar programs in the other branches of the military.
Step6
Earn a bachelor's degree and a commission as an officer at a military academy. This program is open to a limited number each year. A nomination from a Senator or Representative may be required.
Step7
Join the Reserve Officer's Training Corps to earn an officer commission while attending the college of your choice. ROTC, NROTCH and AFROTC programs are offered at thousands of colleges in the U.S.

  • Becoming a reservist in an option for someone who doesn't want a full-time military career.
  • There are civilian jobs in the military that do not require enlistment.
