How to Sex an Emu
Emus are gaining popularity around the world because these Australian natives are hardy and can be harvested for their meat and hides. The eggs are also nutritious. When raising emus, it is necessary to sex them. Fear not, this eHow will tell you how.

1
Check for the sex of an emu when they are chicks.
-
2
Don rubber gloves and gently pick the emu chick up in your hand.
-
-
3
Turn the chick upside down, and part the feathers on either side of the vent. Do this gently.
-
4
Apply a little pressure to either side of the vent with your fingers. If a male, the penis will show as a small white stem. If female, the ****oris (a little knob) will be visible.
-
5
Look at the feather pattern at the top of the chick's head, should you not wish to do the above. The male emu will have a bull's eye pattern, and the female will have more of a striped pattern.
-
6
Determine an "it" when no sex organ is visible or when the feather pattern is "salt and pepper". The "its", or emus with no sexual organs, should be rare, and are generally culled for meat.
-
7
Observe adult emus to sex them. The male will grunt like a pig and whistle to their chicks. A female has a developed throat sac which will allow her to make a "booming" sound when mature.
