Step 1
Make life-long memories when you view and climb some of the world's highest mountains in Tibet. Enjoy the abundant number of rivers and lakes.
-
Step 2
Glimpse the past through sculptures and vivid murals dedicated to Buddha. Experience living history when you visit monasteries and other holy sites.
-
Step 3
Travel during cultural events other than the major Buddhists festivals in Bhutan to get better accommodations and flights. Expect a more rewarding and individualized festival experience.
-
Step 4
Trek through the area between late September and late November, when skies are usually clear and mountain peaks rise to a blue sky.
-
Step 5
Double-check all flights. Confirm domestic and international flights out of Kathmandu at least 24 hours in advance. Weather often causes domestic flights to be delayed or cancelled.
-
Step 6
Understand the health risks. Check with your doctor and the Centers for Disease Control about recommendations for vaccinations and current health risks before departure. Immunizations for meningitis, hepatitis A and typhoid fever are advised.
-
Step 7
Be careful in selecting food and drink. Avoid leafy vegetables which are known to carry parasites. Also be wary of vegetables may have been washed in tap water. Select only fruit that has a skin that can be peeled.
-
Step 8
Wear conservative clothing while traveling to Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet. Typical clothing in these cities is informal but conservative. Short skirts, shorts and revealing tops tend to put women at risk of facing unflattering remarks and unwanted touching.
-
Step 9
Protect your computer. Purchase a pen-sized IBM modem tester to plug into a telephone line to determine whether the line is safe to use. The Nepal telephone lines are sometimes unreliable and could destroy your modem.
-
Step 10
Lock your luggage. Keep cameras, passports, laptops and other valuables with you unless your room has a safe.
