Sailor Moon is the main character of a well-known manga series of the same name. It was created by Naoko Takeuchi. The series was originally published in 1991. Since that time, Sailor Moon manga has been reissued, spun off into different storylines, translated into English and made into anime. To learn how to draw the character of Sailor Moon, it is best to study pictures of her and know what facets of her personality come across through the illustrations. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Issues of Sailor Moon manga series
  • Pencils
  • Inking pens in assorted colors
  • Paper
Step1
Browse through some issues of the Sailor Moon series to get an idea of what the character looks like before you draw her. If your library or comic-book store does not carry the series, you may be able to search the Internet for pictures. Decide what type of action scenes you want to depict.
Step2
Draw a girl with a slightly heart-shaped face and large, round, blue eyes. The heart motif is one found throughout Sailor Moon manga, as she is described as having a kind heart.
Step3
Add long hair that has bangs forming a heart on the forehead and two small puffs on the top of her head, looking almost like animal ears. This is called an "odango" hairstyle, after the word for rice dumplings. Ink the hair yellow when it is time to colorize your drawing.
Step4
Create Sailor Moon's uniform. It is a white sailor dress with a short skirt and blue accents. Add dark pink or red hearts with yellow crescent moons inside them. Her boots are red as well.
Step5
Draw some white, feathery-looking hair ornaments on top of Sailor Moon's head. These barrettes are sometimes used as weapons in battle.
Step6
Use pink as a background color when showing Sailor Moon's alter ego, Usagi the schoolgirl. Usagi is described as a daydreamer. Add stars, flowers, hearts or other decorations that show a dreamy, romantic look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sailor Moon has several alter egos: Usagi Tsukino the schoolgirl, Sailor Moon herself and Princess Serenity. Decide which version of Sailor Moon you want to draw, and concentrate on one character at a time.
  • Be sure that when you draw your own version of Sailor Moon manga, you are doing it for your own enjoyment and not for profit. Copyright infringement is an offense for which you can be fined or punished.
