The Numa Numa Dance started as an amateur video made by Gary Brolsma. In 2006, Brolsma made a video of himself singing and dancing, without actually getting up from his chair. He then posted it on the Internet. The video became an instant sensation and eventually developed into the Numa Numa Contest. Anyone can enter this contest with a similar video. The video contest offers 50 prizes, with the top one offering thousands of dollars.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Numa Numa song
  • Costumes, decorations and extras
  • Video camera
  1. Step 1

Obtain a copy of the song in its original language. While the song has been translated since its first release, you must use the Romanian version in order to enter the contest.

  2. Step 2

Get to know the Numa Numa song, "Dragostea din tei," which is sung by the pop band O-Zone. It was originally performed in Romanian, so even if you find the lyrics, you may not be able to pronounce them. Still, try to get familiar with the melody, the rhythm and the chorus of the song, so you can use the beat for your video performance.

  3. Step 3

Get familiar with the Numa Numa Dance by watching the original and the newly released videos of Gary Brolsma. They can be found on Newnuma.com (see Resources below). This website also showcases the winners chosen in previous years, which may give you an idea of what the judges prefer.

  4. Step 4

Watch winning videos. While watching the original Brolsna video can give you ideas, watching former winners can help you to learn what others are doing. The last grand-prize winner, for example, featured animation and a good number of editing tricks in his last video.

  5. Step 5

    Create your own video.

  6. Step 6

Post your video on YouTube to qualify for the voting (see Resources below). You will need to create an account, complete with a username and password, and then promote the video to get votes. The complete process is free for all entrants.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the video less than 10 minutes, since that is the cutout length for entries. For reference, the grand-prize winner of 2007 produced a video that lasted for 9 minutes and 51 seconds.
