How to Repair Inverted Nipples

An inverted nipple, also known as an invaginated nipple, occurs when a nipple retracts inward instead of protruding. Often, even inverted nipples will protrude when the nipple becomes erect. Though generally not a serious medical condition, many women want to repair the nipple for aesthetic reasons.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Body artist (piercer)
  • Nipple protractor
  • Plastic surgeon
  • Nipple clamp

Step1
Recognize that they are inverted. A simple test to determine if your nipples are inverted or not is to gently pinch them. If they protract outward, they aren't, but if they move inward, they are.
Step2
Stimulate them. Often times, an inverted nipple is simply the result of the tissue being too tight. With repeated stimulation, the tissue begins to loosen, and the nipple may correct itself. Some doctors even recommend using sex toys such as nipple clamps to aid in the stimulation.
Step3
Buy a nipple protractor. There are several specialty devices designed especially to pull out an inverted nipple. Most use a simple suction technique similar to a syringe to extract the nipple. If you cannot find a nipple protractor (generally available at sex stores), they can be made at home using a large syringe or baster.
Step4
Get a nipple ring. If you have your nipples pierced when they are protracted, the nipple ring can force the nipple from its inverted state. There are some downsides, though, as nipple rings can be painful and require cleaning and maintenance for up to 1 year.
Step5
Consider surgery. A simple cosmetic procedure can repair inverted nipples, although a potential consequence is that it may permanently inhibit a woman from breast feeding. Though the plastic surgery is almost always successful aesthetically, the risks involved may be too great for some women.

Tips & Warnings

  • The easiest, least expensive remedies are all ones that you can do from the comforts of your home. Stimulating or rolling the nipple to loosen the tissue on your own should be done before considering more expensive, invasive procedures.
  • Aside from aesthetic reasons, there is little to fear about having an inverted nipple. Most women can still breast feed and there are no risks involved with the condition.
  • Both the Hoffman technique (a stretching exercise) and breast shells (shells worn inside the bra that apply pressure to the nipple) have been shown to prohibit proper breast feeding. In order to avoid any potential problems, try other techniques as opposed to these.
