How to Play Yahoo! Literati

Literati was developed in the 1990s as a computerized variant of Scrabble. Just like Scrabble, players spell words on a board with the letters they have in front of them. The first player puts a word down in the middle of the board, and subsequent players use words on the board to create new words. Points are scored by using letters with point values on them and taking advantage of bonus squares.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the Literati game at Yahoo! by going to the word game section and scrolling down (see Resources below). You may find Literati on the right side of the browser on the initial page, or you may have to scroll through the games to find it.

    • 2

Mouse over and click either the Literati name or icon to play.

    • 3

Enter your Yahoo! id and password in the appropriate boxes to proceed. Yahoo! will provide a skill rating for you.

    • 4

Glance at the advertisement, and then click the blue words to go on to the game room.

    • 5

Choose the game room best suited for your Literati (or Scrabble) skills or choose a social room just for fun.

    • 6

Select a game to join by clicking the "Join" button at a table, or you can create your own Literati game by clicking "Create Table." Sit at the table by clicking the "Sit" button.

    • 7

Prepare to play Literati by clicking the "Start Game" button. The game will start once all of the players have clicked the appropriate button.

    • 8

Play a word across the center section of the board if you are randomly selected to go first by clicking and dragging tiles into position.

    • 9

Submit your word once you have placed all of the letters by clicking the "Submit" button.

    • 10

Wait a moment for other players to challenge the word if challenge mode has been turned on in the game options.

    • 11

Forfeit your turn and remove your tiles, when challenged by another player, if you played a word not found in the Yahoo! dictionary.

    • 12

Look over the new tiles added by the computer after you play your tiles.

    • 13

Keep making new words until all of the letters in your hand (or another player's hand) are used up. You will also stop playing if each player passes on a turn twice in a row.

    • 14

Win the game by scoring the most points with the words you spelled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to come up with two words you can play on each turn, in case another player takes one of your planned spots on the board.

  • Use big-point letters and words on as many bonus spaces as possible to rack up your points.

  • Unlike Scrabble, the letters do not have a set limit for each letter in the pool. Instead, any letter can be drawn on a turn.
