How to Play Yahoo!! Gin

Gin, officially named Gin Rummy by the inventor Elwood T. Baker in 1909, is a card game evolving from an 18th-century card game called Whiskey Poker. A standard 52-card deck is used, and the Aces are always represented as ones. Many players are drawn to Gin because of the amount of strategy involved in what seems like a very simple game to play.

Things You'll Need:

• Yahoo!! account
• Java programming on your computer

1. Direct your web browser to Yahoo!! card games, and look for Gin on the list (see Resources below). You may have to scroll down, or click the "View All" option to see the game listed.

2. Sign in with your Yahoo!! account information.

3. Skip past the ad by clicking the "Click Here to Continue" phrase in blue.

4. Choose a room to play in that matches your current level of play for Gin. Keep in mind that you may have a low rating. Going to an intermediate or expert room means other players may not want to play with you yet.

5. Look carefully at the box with the letters and numbers in it to transfer the proper code to the input box. The code looks scrambled to make sure people, not computers, are actually getting into the rooms to play.

6. Choose between joining a game table (click "Join") and creating a new game table (click "Create Table").

7. Hit the "Start Game" button, so you are ready to play when enough players are together.

8. Look over the 10 cards you receive from the dealer and pay attention to pairs, three or four of a kinds and straights.

9. Pick up the top card at the beginning of your turn, from either the stockpile (cards face down) or the discard pile (cards face up), and compare it to your cards.

10. Discard one card that doesn't help you make a straight or three or four of a kind, ending your turn.

11. Go gin by clicking the "Knock" button on the screen when you have less than 10 points in your hand. Cards are worth their face values with face cards being 10 points and aces offering one point. For example, knock when you have three twos in the same suit.

12. Win the game of Gin at Yahoo!! when you reach the score of 100.

Tips & Warnings

• Always keep track of the cards played, particularly the cards discarded by other players.
• The most versatile card in the game is the seven because it can create more combinations than any other card.
