How to Play Yahoo!! Daily Crosswords

The first crossword puzzle appeared in the December 21, 1913 issue of the New York World in Liverpool, England. By the 1920s, "word-cross" puzzles became a craze in the USA and England. One of the longest running and most difficult crossword puzzles has run in the New York Times since 1942. Today, people can play daily crosswords quickly and easily online at Yahoo!! Games.

1. Go to the word-games section of Yahoo!! to find the daily crosswords game (see Resources below).

2. Access the game by clicking on the daily crosswords icon or name.

3. Mouse over the box under "Featured Puzzle" to highlight the daily puzzle. Click it to take the next step toward playing the puzzle.

4. Choose the level, either regular or master, that you want to play. The regular level provides red letters when you are putting in the wrong letters. It also provides hints.

5. Read the clues on the right side of the game box to figure out the word or words for specific boxes. For example "____ and Clark" could be Lewis or Lois, but the number of boxes available for letters is four, making the answer Lois.

6. Jump to the clues quickly by clicking the boxes with numbers in them. Clicking the box more than once will switch the box to and from the "across" and "down" clues located on the right.

7. Fill in the boxes by clicking on the box you want to add a letter to. The program will allow you to continue writing the letters down or across.

8. Move to the next box in the across or down category by pressing the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

9. Win the game by correctly solving all of the clues and filling in all of the spaces in the puzzle.

Tips & Warnings

• Answer the easy clues first and then move on to the more difficult ones.

• You can clear the entire puzzle by clicking "Options" and "Reset Puzzle."

• Turn on the bubble option to see the clues when you move your mouse over various squares.

• Take Yahoo!! daily crosswords with you by printing out the puzzles on your printer.

• Look at the timer to see how long you have taken to beat the puzzle and try to finish faster than with previous puzzles.

• The game will not show up if you have pop ups blocked.
