Step 1
Select an enema that's right for you. While water bottle enemas and home enema kits are inexpensive and stocked at most pharmacies, consider investing in a steel can enema. Though slightly more expensive, steel can enemas are more durable and easier to clean afterwards.
-
Step 2
Maximize the health benefits of your coffee enema by selecting organic coffees. Do not use decaffeinated or instant coffee brands. Brew 16 to 32 ounces of coffee using clean tap or bottled water.
-
Step 3
Allow the coffee to cool before filling your enema can or bottle. Coffee should be slightly warmer than room temperature. Coffee that's too hot or too cold can cause cramping or discomfort.
-
Step 4
Prepare to take your coffee enema by having towels on hand in case any coffee is spilled. Hang your enema bag or can from a hook that's 18 to 24 inches above your toilet.
-
Step 5
Lubricate your rectum before inserting the enema nozzle. Popular brands of anal lubricants include K-Y Jelly, Astroglide and Vaseline. Gently insert one fingertip into your anus before attempting to take the enema nozzle.
-
Step 6
Open the enema valve. The coffee will begin to flow slowly and comfortably into your rectum. You can stop and start the stream as necessary. Take your time and be patient.
-
Step 7
Hold the coffee inside your bowels for 5 to 15 minutes. The longer you're able to hold the coffee in, the more effectively it can clean your bowels. Try gently massaging your stomach to alleviate any abdominal discomfort.
-
Step 8
Evacuate your bowels and expel the coffee enema. Over the next hour, you may feel the need to have more bowel movements. It's a good idea to stay near a toilet.
-
Step 9
Give yourself a warm water enema to cleanse your bowels and flush away any remaining coffee.
-
Step 10
Clean your enema equipment with soapy water. Rinse and dry your equipment thoroughly before storing it.
