It is very simple to test your cholesterol levels when you use a home test kit. It's just a matter of pricking your finger, waiting a few minutes and reading the results. Some tests claim to be as accurate as the medical lab tests you get at your doctor's office. A home test kit is a good indicator of whether you have high cholesterol, but it should not replace your health care professional's advice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Home cholesterol test kit

    Prepare for the Home Test

  1. Step 1

Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.

  2. Step 2

Relax for a few minutes. Rub your hands together to warm them while you are relaxing.

  3. Step 3

Choose either your middle or ring finger to prick. The finger you choose should not have any calluses on it and should be warmed up. If you are left-handed, choose a finger from your right hand and vice versa.

  4. Step 4

Let the arm of your chosen finger hang down for about 30 seconds. This will allow more blood to flow to that area, making it easier to draw blood.

  5. Test Your Cholesterol at Home

  6. Step 1

Put the selected hand on a table or flat surface, with the back of your hand down and your palm facing up. Then puncture your finger with the testing device, according to the instructions included with your kit.

  7. Step 2

Use some gauze to wipe away the first sign of blood. Next, let your arm hang down again for a few seconds to increase blood flow.

  8. Step 3

Add blood to the collection area of your testing device according to your kit's instructions. Be sure to collect enough blood.

  9. Step 4

Wait while the device tests your blood for cholesterol. Most kits take about 10 to 15 minutes.

  10. Step 5

Read your results by comparing them to the chart included with your kit. Do not use a chart from another home kit or it will not be accurate.

  11. Step 6

Remember that no test result is absolute. Your cholesterol levels can change from day to day. It is best to use an average over a period of time such as six months.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read the kit results in bright light. It will help you compare colors from the kit to the chart with accuracy.
  • A phone number to call if you need help is usually included with a home test kit. Call the support line when you have questions about your test. If you need further help interpreting your results, contact your doctor's office.
