"Oh, he/she is just a puppy." That is no excuse. Follow these simple steps and you will be saying, "This is Hazzel." She is 3 months and she is a pure joy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 hour per day
  • collar or harness
  • leach that is appropriate size for the puppy
  • tiny treats(1/2 bite sized not a snack)
  • Code words that the whole house family will use
  • P A T I E N C E

Step1
Set up code words with family(write them down for the whole family to see, put on refrigerator or in area for all to learn).

Words I use mostly
Leave it - Means Do not touch
Come - Come to me
Sit - Sit
Stay - Stay or Wait
Down - Get down or Off
Okay - release
Cookie - Treat
Up - Go up stairs / Get in the car
Dance - walk on back legs or in circles
Door - Bathroom
Step2
Start with Come. Call the pets name when it comes give it a smell of the treat. Walk away from the pet call the name again. When the pet comes give the pet the treat. Do this for 5-10 minutes.
Step3
Do not E V E R use a voice of agitation or anger. The pet will pick up on this tone. Make it a fun thing. Soon that tail will be wagging when the training session has begun.
Step4
After each lesson do a play time. Do not use old shoes or socks or any household items that you will never want damaged. Papers - Wood - cord looking items that may get confused with electrical cords.
Step5
Next Day call the pets name give a smell of treat. If pet does this simply move on to next command. Sit is easy and most beneficial leading into the next code words.
Step6
Hold treat for sit above pets head. This makes the posture for a sit easy to move into with keeping an eye on the prize. Make sure to give just a smell of treat so they know there will be a treat at the right response.
Step7
From a sit go to the next command you find most beneficial to your lifestyle. Make sure if pet does not catch on quickly - do a review day.
Step8
Some code words are easily learned and followed and some just don't work. Not all codes are for all pets or families.
Step9
***** Hint do something or talk for a run around the yard will the pet is a bit relaxed, Not tired.
Step10
Ready to wear collar or harness follow the same steps. Make pet sit every time before exposing collar or harness, this will make it easier to put it on no matter the size of the pet. Place collar or harness up to pet - let them smell. Give a smell of the treat. Take away the collar or harness. Walk around furniture. Place the collar or harness up to pet again. Give the treat. Walk around the Furniture. This time put on the collar or harness. Give treat. Walk around Furniture. Take off Collar. Do again, and again for only 5-10 minutes.
Step11
Follow same steps from Collar training to leash training. Make sure to have pet sit at the beginning every time you place leash up to or on the pet. After the dog is comfortable in house on leash move to the yard. If you do not have fence do not go all the way to the edge of yard.
Step12
When going on to a side walk or out of yard make sure to say release code so that the pet knows you will not get stressed with the additional steps of freedom it makes. When outside the yard it knows keep the pet close to your right side. The control seems mean but when encountering new animals and sounds the pet knows that your side is the safe zone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Small steps are the best steps. People themselves do not learn to walk overnight and pets do not either. I teach Pee-Pee at 3 weeks, come 3-4 weeks, sit and stay 5-6 weeks. Cookie every time I show a treat. From the very beginning. Some pets are not available until 6 or 8 weeks, even later with breeders or tiny pets. Give a week or two for pet to get familiar with home and family. Train on their schedule and yours. Be positive!!!!
  • Do not hit Pet! E V E R !!!!! Hitting the pet will make it shy away from your hand and others. If you hit the pet on head or nose you may damage the sense of smell, sight, and hearing. Those nerves are close in relative to the head hurts are not always bloody. Do not push the pets nose in accidents. If pet has to go where is it supposed to go? Can it open the Door? No, who is - train that person on pets signs that it has to go. Use go words and go to the door this really works.
