So you would like to raise a “baby Einstein”, right? You took care of yourself during your pregnancy, and a wonderful baby was born. Now a few months have passed and you would like to start using baby food. You are not too sure that all those cute little jars on the grocery store shelf are all that great in spite of the fact that it seems to be the only thing that everyone is using (on television anyhow!) Logic stands that if we as adults are supposed to be eating less processed food then what about our children?!?!!! Here are a few tips for those of you who are daring enough to give your baby a strong start to life with real food – full of vitamins and minerals and great taste!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fresh foods
  • patience
  • inspiration

Step1
Start with one starchy food like rice. You don’t have to buy a powder – use rice that you would cook for yourself and cook it without salt and/or spice. Mash it with a little food processor or if you happen to have a baby food grinder. Keep the fiber down at first – you have to build up to that. Use the simple grains like oatmeal, barley, etc… but use one at a time until you are sure your baby can tolerate it.
Step2
After a few weeks of success, (at about 4-6 months of age) try adding some fruits to their diet such as quick steamed peeled apple, banana or peach. Taste the food yourself and see if you like it. You can microwave small portions of fruit – but the stove works well with just a little steam. Don’t add any sugar or flavorings – they don’t need it.
Step3
Again after a few weeks, start with some veggies. Many of them can be from your own dinner – like steamed broccoli, sweet potatoes, green beans, sweet peas, etc… and even mashed potatoes!
Step4
At about 6-9 months, your little baby should be enjoying eating the variation of soft foods. Now meat, egg and dairy can start fortifying his/her food, even some nice steamed white fish should be very enjoyable to them. As before, keep grinding the food unless it is very soft until he/she can start chewing on their own. They should start enjoying feeling the colorful foods on their tray and even eating them with their fingers! Just wait till they start trying blueberries and raspberries!
Step5
Enjoy going out! Your child should be well able to eat most foods by one year and you shouldn’t have to package all that processed food like cold cereal - just enjoy real food together (unless you are a big fan of spicy wings!)
Step6
Now that you have come this far - you are well on your way to giving your child a great headstart on life. You should see a sparkle in their eyes and a flush on their cheeks. With no processed food in their systems they should be happy and healthy!
