In this article you will learn:
How to Embroider Oilcloth

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Length of Oilcloth
  • Embroidery Machine with teflon or roller pressure foot
  • Size 16 needle or denim needle
  • Masking tape
  1. Step 1

First, decide what kind of design you would like to embroider.

Set up the machine with the appropriate colors and set the pattern on the machine.

If you're going to be doing this by hand, then choose your pattern and copy it over to tracing paper.

  2. Step 2

Decide where you want the pattern to be set on the oilcloth and place masking tape over the entire area you're planning on sewing. This will keep the machine from sticking or eating the fabric.

  3. Step 3

Begin sewing. Either let the machine do it's work, or if you're working by hand, embroider as you normally would. The only difference with oilcloth is that you'll want to use longer stiches than normal otherwise the material can rip and tear out on you. The tape also helps to keep the material from ripping. Don't get freaked out by the tape, it will come off with no problem at the end.

  4. Step 4

After you are finished with your pattern and the design is set, carefully remove the tape. If some bits of tape are still attached a run through in the washer with cool water on the gentle cycle will remove them.

  5. Step 5

    Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Masking tape works well for this however I would not recommend other types of tape.
  • You're oilcloth will most likely be full of creases and folds. Place it flat in a warm area and leave it for a few hours. DO NOT TAKE AN IRON TO IT. The wrinkles and creases will come out as the air warms the cloth.
  • Be careful not to tear the cloth.
  • Do not use irons with this fabric
  • Remember to use longer stiches otherwise your fabric will tear
