Step1
It should have ointments, bandages and other supplies to help you care for your horse’s minor scrapes and injuries. Frequent use without replenishment can render your carefully assembled first-aid kit less effective or even useless.
Step2
To keep that from happening, set aside some time to assess your kit. Make this process a twice a year ritual, with spot checks during the year so you can be assured that you’ll be ready to soothe your horse’s mild injuries.
Make a shopping list. Once you’ve sorted your first-aid kit of outdated medications and contaminated materials, spend some time writing up a list of items to be replaced.
Step3
Basic items in your Horse First Aid Kit :
• thermometer
• antiseptic (either a spray, ointment)
• an inexpensive adult stethoscope
• saline solution
• gauze squares and padding wrap
• self-adhesive bandages or other wrapping materials
• eyewash
• scissors
• a clean towel or two or three
• disposable rubber/latex gloves
• hand wipes for cleaning yourself before tending to a wound or eye (swisper wipes work well)
When your first aid kit is restocked, post a list of its contents inside the lid of the box.
Keep track of your replacement needs, expiration dates.
I find betadine ointments and sprays really useful for small cuts and abrasions.
