Protect your MySpace account

MySpace has of late been used quite frequently by spammers that go to lengths just to hack your account and post comments and bulletins to your friends with their products. I have friends who go through this every week and they still don't get how this happens and how they can stop it. Here's how you do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Monitor your account closely. If you see a comment on a friend's page or a bulletin that was made from your account but you didn't post, then there's definitely something phishy going on...(sorry, just had to do it).

  2. Step 2

Delete all comments and/or bulletins you didn't post to save your friends some headache. Then immediately change the password for your account. If you have the same password for your MySpace account as for the email you use to login, then change it for your email account as well because the hackers can access your email as well if that is the case.

  3. Step 3
Make sure the URL in the browser says myspace.com, compare the two in the picture
Make sure the URL in the browser says myspace.com, compare the two in the picture

To avoid getting hacked you have to know how they do it. The most common way it's done is when you click on a link in a bulletin or comment and it takes you to a screen that looks exactly like the MySpace login page. The only thing is that it isn't the MySpace login page, and if you look closely you can tell.

  4. Step 4

What happens is when you re-type your login info and click submit it gets sent to the hackers, who then store that info and use it to login to your account and spam your friends' pages.

Tips & Warnings
  • To be sure you never submit your login info to a hacker, always type in www.myspace.com in the browser whenever you get redirected to the login page, or what supposedly is the login page.

on 9/30/2008 I have a couple friends who's accounts are CONSTANTLY getting hacked. I keep trying to tell them about clicking on and opening foreign comments and links sent to them, but it never fails that at least once a week one of them falls for something stupid and they end up "sending" me insane comments and messages. Maybe I'll email them your article since they clearly ain't listenin' to me...lol

on 4/2/2008 Thanks...I really needed this tip. I change my pwd every few weeks because of it. Now, I don't have to so often...as long as I keep in mind the page thing. Thanks, again- :)
