Understanding the ASVAB and how the military uses the results can be a bit tricky. There are 3 versions. The High School Version is officially called Form 18/19. It's a paper-based ASVAB commonly given to juniors and seniors in high school. There is then the Paper ASVAB for recruiting, officially known as Forms 20-22. This version is given by the Armed Forces for enlistment purposes only. Finally there is the CAT-ASVAB which is a computerized version of the Forms 20-22. The ASVAB is not an IQ test but rather a battery of tests designed specifically to measure an individual's aptitude to be trained in specific jobs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Quiet time to study

Step1
If you are specifically looking to do well on the GT portion of the test, then you need to study general math - brush up on regular math skills learned through grade school and high school. You will also have to learn to pay attention to what you are reading. For instance, how much of what you read are you understanding and comprehending?
Step2
Check out online sources for testing yourself. Here is a link for sample questions: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/l/blasvabsample.htm
Step3
Keep Studying! Here is a link to a free online study aid from Petersons: http://www.petersons.com/pdf/free/MasterASVAB.pdf
Step4
Just remember that the Army GT score is only part of the ASVAB. The ASVAB is not an IQ test. It does not measure intelligence. The battery of tests were designed specifically to measure an individual's aptitude to be trained in specific jobs.

Tips & Warnings

  • As with any test, take care of the basics, get a good night's sleep, eat well but lightly.
  • I was always advised to take some B complex vitamins before exams to calm my nerves and stay sharp.
  • Don't drink too much caffeine!
