The Army converts the ASVAB subtest scores into 10 different scoring areas which are known as "line scores." These line scores help the army determine which job or jobs a candidate is qualified for. One of these line scores includes the "GT" score, or General Technical, and is the combination of the candidate's VE (Word Knowledge) and AR (Arithmetic Reasoning) scores. This score is especially important if the individual wants to go into any of the following fields: Diver, Special Forces Weapon, Medical ,or Communications Specialist, or Journalist or Broadcast Journalist.

Step1
Contact your installation to see if they offer "FAST" (Functional Academic Skills Training). You can contact your Education or Learning center and ask for the FAST program manager. This course is designed to help raise a Soldier's reading, language , and mathematics skills for Non-Commissioned Officer course attendance, college prep/placement tests, and AFCT or high-school equivalency testing.
Step2
The first step to enrollment in "FAST" is to identify academic weakness. Once identified you are assigned lessons that will remediate areas of academic weakness.
Step3
The FAST program has curriculum that is very flexible. It is structured around the individual's particular need and is self-paced. It is recommended that a participant spend at least 2 hours a day studying for 6 weeks. Paricipation is usually between the hours of 0800-1645.
Step4
In addtion to the FAST program, there are test preparation guides available at your education center, library, most post exchanges (usually for less than $15) or MOS library.
There are also a number of on-line resources for Soldiers.

Tips & Warnings

  • AR 135-100 (Appointment of Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the Army) establishes the qualifying minimum GT score for any officer-producing program at 110.
  • Soldiers who do not meet reenlistment requirements or have a GT score of less than 100 are eligible for the FAST program.
  • FAST can be used by soldiers, authorized civilians and family members to help increase their academic competencies and job skills necessary for performance and career growth.
