Know that cognitive therapy is based upon the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors; and that changing the thoughts can change feelings and behaviors. Keep in mind that there are a couple of different forms of cognitive therapy.

Learn that the first and oldest form of cognitive therapy was coined by psychologist Aaron T. Beck in the early 1960s. Ponder the notion that cognitive therapy was built upon the foundation that we as human beings have full control over our psychological health by how we process information mentally.
Step3
Use cognitive therapy to treat depression, anxiety, phobias, some compulsions, addictions, sleep disorders and some sexual disorders. Spend a whole day thinking about why you feel a certain way or do a certain thing and then you will begin to see how cognitive therapy works.
Step4
Look in your local yellow pages or online for experts on cognitive therapy in your area. Make an appointment to meet with a professional who works with this therapeutic process for a better feel on how it works and its effectiveness.
Step5
Visit a library or book store for a selection of books from historical information about the therapeutic model to cognitive self help books. Use one of these self help books to overcome or re-formulate how you do something in your life. It will help you get some of practical application of this therapeutic model.

  • When contacting a psychiatric office, ask if any practitioners in that office use cognitive therapy on a regular basis. There are often people in offices who have a therapeutic expertise.
  • A recent subset of cognitive therapy is the "mindfulness movement", which emphasizes merely being conscious of your actions and decisions.
