Issue a proclamation that you no longer will let someone butcher what was once a fine head of hair. You've outgrown the bowl-cut, you're too old for long locks and it's time to settle into a style that suits your melon. Stand up, be heard and tell the person with the shears you want to get a proper haircut.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Insist on a scissor cut rather than a razor cut. Scissors can negotiate the little bumps and dips in your noggin so your hair can grow back evenly.

  2. Step 2

Ask to have your top cut last. The barber should reduce the volume around the sides and back of your head before determining how much to leave on top.

  3. Step 3

Pay special attention to the temple line. Remove as much density as possible from this area so your hair won't puff up later. Ask your barber to give this area special attention.

  4. Step 4

Insist on a natural line, rather than a manufactured one, along the back of your neck, around the ears and your sideburns (no matter their length). A subtle edge will appear slightly grown in so it won't look like you just got scalped when you step out of the barber chair.

  5. Step 5

Allow the barber to see you as you truly are. Don't wear any gels or other products in your hair on the day of your haircut. Let your barber see how your hair naturally falls. He can follow that line to give you your best cut.
