How to Hide a Smoking Habit

If you smoke, you will meet people who don't approve of your habit. Rather than listen to their complaints, you can hide your habit. Here are several effective methods for hiding the evidence of your smoking.

Instructions

    • 1

Have a place to hide your cigarettes, lighter, matches and ashtrays. Keep them out of sight when not in use. The best course of action is not to have an ashtray at all, but rather dispose of each individual butt to keep the evidence to a minimum.

    • 2

Smoke outside your home and car to avoid lingering odors that will give you away.

    • 3

Leave the vicinity of the person you are hiding the habit from every time you want to smoke. The smell of smoke can carry some distance. Either take a long walk or run an errand when you wish to smoke.

    • 4

Wear a smoking jacket or coat when you smoke. The odor will largely cling to your outer clothing, and a jacket can be discarded before you see anyone else.

    • 5

Carry an odor eliminating spray to take care of lingering odors on your clothing. These inexpensive sprays are available in grocery and drug stores. Spray it directly onto the clothing, allow it to dry for several minutes, and then check that the odor is gone.

    • 6

Hide telltale smoker breath by using a breath spray, chewing a strong-smelling gum or eating a mint candy. Chewing parsley can neutralize any powerful odors.

The only person you can successfully lie to about smoking is a)yourself or b)another smoker. Non-smokers can smell the stuff a mile away. Your hands stink. Your clothes stink. Your car smells. When you use air freshener or "neutralizer" it just smells like smoke and whatever crap you're trying to use to mask the smell. Your breath is awful once your mint or gum gives out. The suggestions above can lessen the smell but whenever I see my husband doing the things suggested above I know he has started smoking. Again. When you try to cover it up, you're in effect lying. That undermines trust, which strains relationships and can cause them to fail. Either admit you're a smoker and do so openly or do whatever it takes to quit and stay quit. Trying to lead a double life ruins your life as well as the lives of those around you.
