Console pianos are smaller pianos than the usual pianos most people have in their homes. Many have also gone digital, making composing music on them fun and easy. They are lighter and therefore can be portable or moved easily. Use these steps to learn more about console pianos and where to buy one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk with a music professional about the pros and cons of buying a digital piano. If you have a piano instructor, talk with him about the console piano choices.

  2. Step 2

Research the options, prices and features of console pianos on the internet to narrow down your choices. Guitar Center is a great website to find available console pianos. This company has stores all over the country, too, so you can go try one of these keyboards in person, too.

  3. Step 3

Decide between digital or analog. This may not seem like a huge difference, but those who know about pianos will tell you it matters. Analog is a more classic piano sound, while digital is a different sound but also allows for easier access with recordings and in composing.

  4. Step 4

Think about your price range. The average price of a console piano, whether digital or not, ranges between $1,000 and $3,000 depending on the features.

  5. Step 5

Narrow your choices and see them up close. When you have three to five favorite console piano models picked out, find a local piano retailer to test them and compare features and prices.

  6. Step 6

Compare prices with more than one piano retailer. When comparing prices, make sure that you are comparing the same model number so the features are the same.

Tips & Warnings
  • Think used. If you live in a metro area or in a city with a music school, you may be able to find a console piano for less and still in great shape.
