How to Get a Quick Divorce

Divorce doesn't have to be a long, drawn out affair. The old rules that had spouses hiring private detectives to get proof of wrongdoing on the part of their spouse is no longer necessary. When both people agree to the divorce and the terms of the divorce, there are several ways to get a quick one.

From Quick Guide: Family Law
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Agree with your spouse about the terms of the divorce. Quick divorces are usually granted when there is no litigation about shared assets and child custody. Decide in advance who will get the house, the cars and anything else of value.

  2. Step 2

Separate as soon as possible if your spouse wants to contest the divorce. A contested divorce can take years, while a marriage in which the couple has been living apart for a year can get a quick divorce granted.

  3. Step 3

File for a no-fault divorce. This absolves either party of any responsibility for the end of the marriage. The no-fault divorce does not require valid reasons to get a quick divorce.

  4. Step 4

Locate cities or neighboring states that grant faster divorces than the area that you live in. For example, Nevada residents can get a quick divorce in Reno.

  5. Step 5

Seek a divorce in another country. Some countries, such as the Dominican Republic, will grant quick divorces to foreigners. Both spouses generally have to agree on foreign divorces, as well as the distribution of assets, in order to make them legal.
