The Monkey Fist Knot was first used in sailing to add weight to the end of a rope when throwing it. This rope knot is also used in rock climbing and hiking when throwing a rope over or around sturdy trees or rocks. Tying a Monkey Fist Knot is easy. Make yours as large as you need it to be.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Place the rope in the palm of your hand. Leave about 3 inches below the bottom of your hand to tighten the rope.
Step2
Wrap the rope around your four fingers vertically three times. Keep the rope you are wrapping in your hand. Keep the rope tight over the fingers.
Step3
Separate your fingers. Pass the end of the rope over the wrapped rope and between the fingers in the middle. Horizontally wrap the end of the rope down and around the wrapped ropes two times and then wrap the end of the rope around just one side of ropes once.
Step4
Slide the rope off your fingers. Hold the bottom of the loop between your forefinger and thumb. Vertically wrap the end of the rope around inside pieces three times.
Step5
Wrap the rope inside the vertical loop across the horizontal loop and loop around three times.
Step6
Pull the two ends to the knot tight. This makes the knot sturdy and gives it weight.
Step7
Tie the loose end of the rope to hold the knot in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hold the knot in your throwing hand. Hold the rope loosely when you throw the Monkey Fist Knot.
  • To make the knot bigger, wrap each section of rope around more times.
