A drum composter is a spherical composter that allows the compost to rotate. It minimizes odor and accelerates the biodegrading process of the compost. This drum composter is inexpensive and effective. A drum composter takes approximately two to three hours to build.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 2-by-2 foot pieces of plywood
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw with saber blade
  • 2 1-by-4 boards cut to 24 inches
  • 2 2-by-4 boards cut 26 inches
  • Drill
  • 49-inch piece of rebar
  • 35 inches of 3/4-inch PVC pipe
  • 2-by-4 board cut 40 inches in length
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • 32-by-62 inch piece of 1/4-inch fence wire
  • Staples
  1. Step 1

Measure a circle with a 10-1/2 inch radius on the plywood.

  2. Step 2

Cut the circle out of the plywood with a circular saw.

  3. Step 3

Measure and mark the center length of the two 1-by-4 boards. Place two 2-by-4 boards onto the boards' center marks to make a "T" shape. Nail and glue them to the 1-by-4 boards.

  4. Step 4

Place the 1-by-4 boards on the ground with the 2-by-4 boards sticking up into the air.

  5. Step 5

Measure each 13 inches from the top of each 2-by-4 board. Drill a hole through each of the boards at that spot. The hole needs to be wide enough for the rebar to slide through and turn around.

  6. Step 6

Drill a hole in the center of each plywood piece the same size as in the 2-by-4 boards.

  7. Step 7

Slide one end of the rebar through one of the plywood holes and then through the hole in the 2-by-4 board. Cover the rebar with the PVC pipe. Slide the other plywood piece onto the other end of the rebar until it fits firmly against the PVC pipe. Place the 2-by-4 board onto the rebar. Press it firmly against the circular sheet of plywood.

  8. Step 8

Place the 40-inch 2-by-4 board across the top of the other 2-by-4 boards. Nail it into place.

  9. Step 9

Staple the fence wire onto the edge of plywood boards. This creates the cage for the compost. Leave a 2-inch flap on one end of the wire to remove and add compost to the drum. Lock the flap in place with a small piece of wire.
